senior editor Morgan Michener shares her top picks for patio furniture.
“Don’t wear white after Labor Day” — that old fashion policy is long gone! As are the rules that dictate how we “should” design our outdoor spaces. These days, we’re unafraid to set out stunning pieces we genuinely love, considering that there are lots of easy-to-care-for furnishings on the market (which just need a quick wipe-down every so often) and outdoor fabrics that offer soft seating and weather resistance. and while there’s no end to the colors and patterns in stores now, lately I’ve been drawn to all things fresh and white. After all, white is that super-chic non-color that opts for everything. This spring, try it on for size in your own backyard.
This creative piece includes a built-in table and two seats, and is a great option for those who like to entertain outdoors. Weathered grey planks lend interest to its white frame, and give the “bench” a clean, nautical look.

This plant stand is one of Ikea’s seasonal pieces, and can live indoors or out (just apply a quick spray of lacquer to the wood for added weather protection). I’d use it as a super-stylish console outside, and then bring it inside when the weather started to chill.

I love the tight weave of this small dining table; it feels reliable and looks well-designed. It’s an ideal piece for small-space dining, but I also think it would be fun used as an end or occasional table.

I gotten six of these Fermob chairs, and the matching table, over 10 years ago. They’re a design classic for any deck or patio. Plus, they fold and store beautifully, so they’re best for any extra seating you may need outside.

For a fun alternative to a classic deck swing, try hanging one of these rattan chairs from Serena & Lily. I love their ’60s vibe and Scandinavian look.
